From Tokyo to Tampa? Florida Ready to Host Olympics if Japan Backs Out

The Sunshine State is ready to go if things don’t improve in the Far East.

We may very well be in the final months of the coronavirus crisis, as a number of highly effective vaccines continue to make the rounds throughout the global society, but there are still months between now and when experts believe that we’ll reach a proper percentage of the population becoming immune.

This means that, as much as Japan was looking forward to hosting the Olympics this year, they may very well not be in a safe position to do so.

Enter The Sunshine State, who this week offered up sunny Florida as an alternative.

Florida’s chief financial officer on Monday told the International Olympic Committee that the state would be happy to host the Olympics Games amid speculation that current hosts Japan may back out.

Jimmy Patronis sent a letter to Thomas Bach, the head of the IOC, “to encourage you to consider relocating the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo, Japan to the United States of America, and more specifically to Florida.”

“With media reports of leaders in Japan ‘privately’ concluding that they are too concerned about the pandemic for the 2021 Olympics to take place, there is still time to deploy a site selection team to Florida,” he said.

Japan has remained publicly optimistic about the possibility of hosting the games, but the rumor mill continues to churn out significant reports of a possible exist strategy being discussed.
